Having read the entire trilogy I will say that, IMHO, this was not Lackey's best work. This first book in the trilogy felt somewhat mundane, in the sense that the author seemed to me to have written an entire novel's worth of 'set-up' (i.e. preparing the future action as it were) without any payoff. This novel therefore did not feel particularly exciting. It also ended quite abruptly.

One problem with this trilogy is that the next two novels also perpetuated the aforementioned (and don't I sound wordy! :) problems with the story: the entire trilogy also felt like a mere prequel and seemed to serve merely to set up a additional novels in this series.
