My main problem with the book & why I found it so hard to get into was that there was not a single picture of the tulips the author talks about.
It was hard enough to wrap my mind around the concept of people selling everything they own to obtain a single tulip bulb. I get that it wasn't about the flower but about the rarity and about showing off wealth & power etc but it just seems kind of silly. And without any pictures of what he's talking about it just made it dry and even more aloof. The Admirael van der Eijck sold for 1000 guilders! Great! What the hell does an Admirael van der Eijck look like? Is this information I'm meant to have in my brain already? I'm not saying it needs to be a picture book but some illustrations if the more important varieties would have made the book make a lot more sense to me.
