This is one of those books I'd always heard about but never read. Yet, somehow, listening to it, it all felt very familiar. I meant to listen to it before Christmas, but it was just as much fun in January. I enjoyed it both for the humor - which hits a sweet spot of slightly ridiculous but not too much so - and the way this family of 'bad' kids manages to get the Christmas story in ways that the 'good' kids don't, if only because it's so familiar to them. I spend the weeks before Christmas going over the Christmas story with 4 and 5 year olds in Sunday School, and while they don't ask questions quite like the Herdmans, they do notice things in a different way then we adults do after years of hearing the story. The story never feels preachy, simply funny and sincere.
