I enjoyed this book, despite the fact that none of the three main topics (English literature, theology, and mental health) are of much interest to me. It's definitely well-written, although I can see how readers of Middlesex could be disappointed. There's not many strikes of brilliance here, and it's not a book that's going to stay with me for long. It's a fine capturing of collegiate times, and there are some great descriptions (my favorite was describing frat boys as rising from a couch on a dark room like open-mouthed carp surfacing from the gloom of lake water) but the core story is relatively mundane (love triangle between three relatively meh characters) and the conclusion doesn't leave you with much bang. But it's easy to read and definitely compelling ... just not earth-shattering or life-changing.
