I was warned that this book read a lot slower than Game of Thrones by a couple of friends vested in the series. Yet, because I had a long weekend and a snow storm, I read this book in fewer days than the first of the series. And, I enjoyed more than I thought I would.

I like dark, but this book was dark in a way I had not expected. Where the first book is tempered with happy moments and unexpected victories, Clash of Kings has sexual assault, abuse, torture, and heinous or threatening acts on nearly every page. Even as characters I didn't care for in the first grew into ones I liked, they did so by suffering through the imposed circumstances. In that aspect it was a slog for me to finish. But, finish I did and now need something to cleanse the palette before book three. Winter is coming.
