I know it's tiresome to compare a book to the movie adapted from it (and I usually try to avoid this as a general rule), but I love Todd Field's film version so much that it was inevitable that my opinion of the movie would creep into my perception of the book. Fortunately Tom Perotta is in predictably sharp form, and the book is both more hopeful and more ambiguous than the movie, avoiding the too-neat ending that worked for the film but would've looked silly here. It's one of the rare books that has something new to bring to the tired "look how effed-up suburbia is" genre, and it somehow manages to be both funny and terrifying.
