I thoroughly enjoyed this, it's a non-complicated, linear tale of chivalry and adventure. Alleyne, a youth brought up in very sheltered circumstances in a monastry is ordered to spend a year in the world before taking his vows. He soon meets up with a veteran archer who introduces him (and a fellow escapee from the monastry)to a knight at arms raising an army to take to France. Brave heart wins fair lady of course, and doesn't return to the monastic life. I don't know if the past was really like this - but it's wonderful to imagine it might have been.
