This was our June book club selection. I didn't quite finish so I'm still reading it. Overall, a very well-written book with a lot of historical value in that it is based on the author's family lineage. It does get a little depressing sometimes though just being reminded of the suffering many African Americans have endured -- and the characters in this book were considered 'Free'.

Sybil Barkley-Staples Hi Cherita,

I read this book and thought it was well-written, but I was emotionally drained in parts after reading about the hard times for African Americans in the story.
