The Guardian, by Nicholas Sparks, follows the life of Julie Barenson, a young widow. After four years of quiet and compassionate marriage, her husband dies a premature death following the discovery of a brain tumor. Not long after her husband Jim has passed, she recieves a baby Great Dane, and a note from her deceased husband saying that he would forever be grateful and watch over her. After four years of living on her own (with Singer, the now-grown and huge Great Dane)Julie trys out the dating world again. The story evolves into a typical love tale about finding love after loss. However, Nicholas Sparks throws in an obstacle in the form of a man named Richard, whom Julie had gone on a total of 5 dates with. After acknowledging that Richard wasn't really what Julie needed as a boyfriend, she decides to stop seeing him. The story continues while the young widow finds happiness again, and the man she believes has been the right choice all along. Against Richard's wishes, Julie is more than content with Mike in the small town she has grown to love and cherish. And without Julie's knowing any better, Richard isn't willing to let her have that happiness.
Overall, I absolutely loved The Guardian! It took a few days to get into, but after a few chapters you really get sucked in. And despite it's cliche appearance, the book is full of twists that you'd never expect and makes you question what love and abuse can do to someone's character and thought process.
