It hurts me to give this book such a low ranking but I have to be true to my impression of it. I love Amy Tan and all the books I've read by her... up until this point. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't like any of the characters and I didn't like the way it mainly stayed in the present, despite being narrated by a dead woman (if I remember correctly). It was about a group of travelers who end up in a rather delicate and dangerous situation in Burma. The trouble was I didn't really care if any of them made it out alive. The good thing is that I learned enough about the country Myanmar/Burma to be useful on some future trivia questions, so I guess reading the book did have its perks. If you want to read Tan, go for The Kitchen God's Wife. I loved that one.
