A really excellent first volume of a manga that's proving really interesting. I really like the fact that all the characters in this series look different from each other; in addition to thinking up a great story, Urasawa is an amazing artist who puts thought into these things.

In the first volume the main mystery is only starting up, but the story of Dr Tenma and his struggles with hospital politics is compelling enough to hold its own. It's also well-researched in everything from the German setting to the medical procedures.

I was given this volume to read by a friend who doesn't normally like manga or graphic novels of any kind. I can see why this proved to be the exception to the rule. It transcends the pitfalls and clichés manga often has, and instead turns them to its advantage.
