Simple to simplistic in plot and characterisation, this novel is overrated, in my view, though well meaning, suitable and appropriate to the youngest end of the Young Adult scale. It was to unidimensional and by the numbers to hold my interest as an adult, but I appreciate the fact that it tackles the important themes of prejudice and racism. I do tend to think that if it wasn't for the naughts and crosses idea replacing that of skin colour prejudice, this novel wouldn't have been so highly rated, as it really lacks nuance and depth. Dystopian novels seem interesting for their own sake at the moment and this will bring it some readers. If it wasn't a bad pun, I'd say it's vision was too black and white!!
