This is another excellent book by Karpyshyn. The plot and writing bear a strong resemblance to the Darth Bane trilogy in that Karpyshyn focuses on multiple characters from both sides, leaving the reader to wonder who will come out on top. Whenever a key character dies, the reader has an emotional response. It is brilliant writing for a genre that does not easily involve the reader.
Unlike most other Star Wars writers, Karpyshyn does not get bogged down in the science fiction. There is very little reference to details of advanced Sith martial arts; too much description for an alien world; or vague references to genre details that overwhelm the reader. His books are about character interactions and character development. The result is a fascinating storyline that does not infringe on the expanded universe of other genre authors.
Overall, it is a great book. This adaptation of a video game is much more successful than the Force Unleashed books; owing as much to the author as the difference between the creators of Force Unleashed and Old Republic. The Bane trilogy is slightly better because Karpyshyn totally controlled the plot; but he clearly was given a lot of freedom in crafting this story.
