This book shit the bed. It started out so promising. I loved the darkly wicked and hilarious dynamics between the family of eccentric dog owners. Midway through, however, the author must have suffered some kind of midlife crisis. In the matter of a few pages the protagonist witnesses his brother and two friends drown while hiking, his mother drop dead instantly upon hearing the news, then he nearly drowns and loses his grandfathers sailboat. Wtf!?! I hate to give up on a novel once I've invested time into it but I am cutting my losses and pulling the plug. I can't waste any more time on this turd of a novel. A real shame because the author did a great job of developing a band of crazy characters, has a witty streak of sarcasm and is otherwise a gifted writer. Too bad really.
