I found this book utterly fascinating. As a travel narrative, it's barely coherent -- the book is ordered by geography rather than chronology, so chapters tend to jump around between different trips to the same area. And if you're a bird/animal lover, you'll be frustrated by the tiny tidbits of information on exotic species.

But none of this really matters while you're reading, because the places Flannery goes to, the people he interacts with, and the nutso things he does in pursuit of specimens are just so riveting! And despite the book's disorganization, you will come away with an overview of New Guinea's habitats and native cultures that you won't easily forget.
