Alex Plumtree must save his family press. He must clear up a mystery author's mysterious disappearance--with the final five chapters of his blockbuster follow-up missing. He must clear up a decades old mass kidnapping of refugee children. He's very busy. What he really wants is to do all this and see his beloved Sarah return his secret affection. (That's as romantic as it gets, folks. And that's just fine. Something about British restraint really helps pull of that part of the story.)
There have been comparisons between this and some of Dick Frances' work. Now I've got to read some of those to see if Frances is that good.
