Ghost
by Alan Lightman
by Alan Lightman
Despite the title, Ghost is not a ghost story which I didn't realize until I was halfway through the book. It's really a psychological story about people wanting to feel "special" wanting to find meaning in their lives, wanting something new and different to happen, and also about fear. I liked Lightman's writing style and feel he did a great job in developing the character of Martin as well as the atmosphere in the mortuary. However, this book failed to satisfy me. Part of the reason, I'm sure, is that I was expecting a different kind of a story, but also because (without spoiling anything) I found certain events ridiculous and one thread of the story could have been developed more. I wouldn't say this book was bad, but I wouldn't recommend it either. As the Ren & Stimpy commercial for "Log" says, "It's better than bad, it's good."
