Like others, I thought that maybe, if you combine 'Blackout' and 'All Clear' they are probably a bit too long. The last few chapters of 'Blackout' and first few chapters of 'All Clear' are very similar, so all in all the two are probably about 100 pages to long in total. If you had trouble understanding Inception then you may get a bit confused reading this, it's all back and forth to the future and the past, and places inbetween, with several of the characters having multiple names and multiple plots.

All the loose ends from 'Blackout' are tied up (mostly) and we find out what happens to all the characters, or near enough. I actually found the last 3rd of the book quite sad, some people died, some lived, and after the best part of 1200 pages, you get rather attached to them and are really willing them all to come out of it alive. I think that's really the special thing about these books, they've been criticised on here in some reviews for being too repetitive and too long winded, but it gives them a brilliant feel of authenticity to them. The characters are wonderfully written and the the peril of the Blitz and the V1 & V2 attacks is easy to feel as you read. It's not all sad and doom and gloom though, yet again Alf and Binnie provide plenty of comic relief and plenty of parts of the books had me chuckling away to myself.

I'm actually quite sad to have finished the two books, after 1400 pages the characters have become friends, the lives they lead almost real, the plots frighteningly realistically written and the books themselves are ones that I have truly enjoyed reading and I will miss reading them. There really does need to be more sci-fi like this.
