I heard a snippet of an interview with the author on the radio and formed the wrong idea of this book. I thought it was a novel exploring the experiences of the first native American to graduate from Harvard--there is some of that, but mostly this is a novel about a young woman who has to find her way in the world of late 17th century Massachusetts. All is deftly done, but the romantic plot took me by surprise and somewhat disappointed me. Brooks does a good job, however, and at times I felt like she had written the contemporary Jane Austen novel.
