This book is a bit midboggling. The world-building was strange and the writing did nothing to ease my confussion. Don't get me wrong, the book is incredibly original and the concepts in it are wildly imaginative and engrossing. I liked it overall and enjoyed, but it dragged at points, it jumped from one thing to the other without prior notice, the characters suddenly remembered something, or did something or said something and I didn't even notice, there was no sense of urgency in the narration and the protagonist somehow had time to plan social gatherings while in between being almost eaten by monsters and saving the world. I didn't particularly like many of the characters and I never found the love interest attractive, but I didn't hate reading about them. What perhaps bothered me the most was the resolution of the story. It seemed a bit too easy and convenient to me (view spoiler).
But overall, this book is not bad. It is enjoyable and its original concept engaging and interesting. The steampunk element was nicely-played out and the bit of paranormal greatly enhanced the experience of reading it.

The writing and pacing, from what you told, doesn't sit well with me.
