This was an enjoyable, engrossing read. There was a long time between when I started it and when I picked it back up to finish so I was a little out of step, but I quickly got back into it.

The characters are fun, if a little flat (I never felt terribly connected to them); the adventure was a good trip. I think this story has the potential to spawn a fantastic sequel or a prequel, now that we've been introduced to the magic of it but at the same time, it's almost more fun sitting on its own without a full exploration of everything - the author leaves what happened in the past largely to the reader's imagination and I appreciate that. It's nice not to be spoon-fed the story, which is particularly rare in a young adult novel.
