I already put my placeholder for all books Pratchett on my shelf (Small Gods), but I decided I have to single out this one, since it's easily the best (or one of the best at the very least) installment of the Discworld series.

Sam Vimes, Commander of the Watch, travels into the past to give adivice to his younger self, and to make sure his future happens at all. This sounds like a familiar plot, but it is treated in a unique way: For one, Vimes isn't fazed by meeting his inept younger self, no sophisticated space/time paradoxed occur -- instead, Pratchett forcuses on how the olders elf is sturck by the younger's vulnerabiltity and (yes) overzealous stupidity -- in other words, the focus is on the human aspect of the story. This, in fact, is the main strength of the book -- it takes its time to show what Vimes is fighting for -- his family, his life, always with a light touch, but overall more -- sober? than in his other books.

In some other Discworld books, much more was at stak...more

252583 We have pretty much the same review of this book. I don't think you will find a better story anywhere.
