Oh how I love the City Watch books, one day they will run out, only Snuff left after this! Best not to think about it.

This is the 34th Discworld novel, and the 7th in the City Watch series - so the characters are really rather bedded in now. None the worse for it!

Vimes is on top form, as usual, setting the world to rights. There is a darkness brewing in his city, the old hatred between dwarfs and trolls is bubbling up and if something is not done, there could well be a war on the streets. Why do they hate each other? What started all this trouble in the first place? Just ancient hatred since the dawn of time, beliefs, natural instincts? Many have theories, but they all need to grow up a bit and change, play some games instead, maybe a nice game of Thud!

Pratchett handles the tricky subject of racial warfare and hatred with a deft hand. It really rings true with many animosities and endless conflicts around the world. Many are long past peace, though many try to rekindle it. If only Pratchett could author the narrative on some of the political meetings in our world too, we might come to a better reality.
