Many of the usual fantasy tropes are present with some pleasant twists. Merlyn's magic and his attempts to explain his access to hidden knowledge were highlights.

The best bits though were certainly young Arthur's lessons from his wizardly tutor. On many occasions he would be turned into some manner of beast or bug to experience life among another, wholly different set. This exposure to his world from a completely novel viewpoint was the foundation for his kingly edification. White's attention to detail in these scenes made for some immersive reading where one feels comfortable in the feathers of an owl or the chitin of an ant.
