After listening to friends talk about this last night, I wish I had listened to it on audiobook. The book has amazing potential but starts slow (the kind of slow that I might have walked away from it if I wasn't reading it for book club). And though this is told in first person narrative, it has a 3rd person narrative feel - I really don't know how to explain it but all of the characters seemed distant. I never felt like I truly connected with them. However, I did really like some of the secondary characters like Jo and Alistair. Additionally there were some significant plot holes with the book.

Despite mixed feelings about this one, I am interested in seeing how Johnson develops the story in book 2 but will probably listen to it rather than read it.

Hannahlily You're right about the audiobook; it's excellent. I agree completely about everything you wrote about the book. Slow start, lack of depth in characters, and plot holes. I was entertained, though, and will most likely listen to book 2, especially if it has the same narrator.

I am keeping fingers crossed that they will keep the same narrator.
