First, the good: this is possibly the most beautiful graphic novel I've ever read. And the way the images carry the story is genius.

Unfortunately, the Orientalism left me feeling sour about the whole thing. I kept trying to give Thompson the benefit of the doubt, but in the end, I still found it problematic. This essay sums up my thoughts better than I could.

To Thompson's credit, he has engaged in several lengthy discussions about the perceived Orientalism in his work. But I still found his defenses problematic.

I'd give 5 stars to the art, and even a couple of stars to some of the themes. But mostly I just feel a little let down because I regarded Thompson so highly before this.
