Traveling the last few weeks with a copy of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek has been like going around with an old, quite astute, very observant friend. Annie Dillard has the amazing ability to take the mundane, the everyday and transfigure it into moments (augenblick, as she would say) of worship. It is no wonder why she is often compared to Thoreau–albiet I think she is much more accessible. Dillard meditates on a year in Virginia's Blue Ridge valley with the insights of a naturalist and the wisdom of a shaman. I underlined the lines which were especially profound, which, as it turned out, was every other sentence.
