I wanted to like this book. Usually I like books where the narrator/author has a strong voice, an individuality. But this guy rubbed me the wrong way. I felt like the book was meandering and self-indulgent. I couldn't understand the frequent digs at France and at conventional businesspeople/academicians. Finally, I felt like the author would often drop in details designed to make himself look good (his favorite books were all written before 1900, most of them in antiquity; he made a bunch of money; he's very clever). So, I liked his main thesis and some of the bits of text around it, but I won't be rereading this one.
