I enjoyed the novel for what it was. Quick read. Relatively well-paced for the first 2/3 of the book, then becomes somewhat tedious. Author missed some opportunities to give the characters more dimension. The kids have been thrust into an arena where they are supposed to kill or be killed, after all. This is a great opportunity to give the characters some moral depth. Instead, Collins goes out of her way to make sure that the good guys are all good and the bad guys are all bad, even going so far as to make sure Katniss's kill of the final contender was a mercy killing (nevermind that the poor guy had to suffer for an hour at the mouths of hideous beasts before she felt it was more good than bad to off him). It is a young adult novel, sure, but so is Lord of the Flies, which doesn't shy away from entertaining some hard truths about human nature under dire circumstances. It would have been interesting to see some of that here. Really intriguing concept. Looking forward to the rest of the trilogy and the movie.
