I haven't read anything by Brown since she started writing animal mysteries, but this charming novella reminded me why I used to love her books.

The story ensues over one summer day, as young Nickel, her cousin Leroy, and her mother and Aunt Wheezie (Loiuse) make a trip to the beach at Cape Cod. Much childhood teasing goes on between Nickel and Leroy who is sensitive, especially since the recent death of his mother. But the teasing is not limited to the children, as Nickel's mother and aunt still go at it with some fervor.

While amusing throughout, the book became laugh-out-loud funny towards the end.
