I spent 7/8 of this book feeling that there was no initial momentum, no development and no direction. I was moderately interested by the vivid (if repetitive) descriptions of life in the military backwater the characters inhabit. But the, as the Melville House blurb states, the developments close to the end are "startling." The final head-long rush to resolution is worth - just barely - the investment of reader attention that leads to it.
One thing about the MHP edition, the inconsistency and sloppiness with regard to character names really irritated me. Misspelling the main character's name a few different ways at different points (along with the names of other characters) was a sloppy aspect of the editing and transliteration. I expect more from Melville.
