This was my first Tamora Pierce book (somehow). It sounds like it isn't representative since it was initially released on audio, and Pierce said that influenced her writing style. But I was really drawn to the concept of mages, unusual folks with magical powers drawn from plants, or stones, or water (they have specialties).

Stone mages like Evvy, the heroine (actually, she's training to be a mage, but the power is there) can do fun stuff, like make a mountainside glitter, or go into a trance and fly into the heart of a mountain, and talk with stones and spirits...pretty cool. Evvy is fiesty and doesn't play by the rules, yet has the proper respect for her mentor and nature. She has to challenge herself to save an island from a volcano that's about to explode. Yeah! I'll definitely be reading more Pierce in the future.
