I've heard many wonderful things about Lethem's "Fortress of Solitude" which I'll have to read soon. But I was given this book and thought it'd give me a taste of his writing style. But then I was told all of his books are totally different and you'd never know they were written by the same guy. I think that's awesome. "Gun, With Occasional Music" is written like an old-time detective story and because the time period is never said out right I assumed it was the 1940s. And then a comment is made about "the office" and an evolved sheep. And "babyheads" and "make". And I realized this is the future. But that's how he writes the whole time. No clear explanations about anything. You just have to accept the time and place. This story is as much about a murder mystery as it's about distopic society and an inablity to conform to this society. And when it seems hopeless, it's not. A wonderful book...I recommend it.
