V is for Vengeance is the 22nd book of the Alphabet series by Sue Grafton, set in fictional Santa Teresa CA.

The book's prologue, set in 1986, narrates how a young man got himself into trouble gambling, borrowed from a loan shark, and ultimately perished.

The main story is set in May 1988, told from several characters' point of view.

Kinsey observes and reports a shoplifter at Nordstrom's. She is shocked to learn of the woman's apparent suicide soon after the arrest. The dead woman's fiancee asks Kinsey to find out how to contact her children. Kinsey suspected the shoplifter was not working alone, and gradually uncovers evidence of a shoplifting crime ring.

Nora is the wealthy wife of Channing Vogelsang, an entertainment lawyer. They live in Malibu and Montebello. She is somewhat bored with her life, and for excitement does her own investing on the side.

Lorenzo Dante Jr., known as Dante, has inherited the family businesses, including loans and a distribution ring for stolen goods. His brother Chappy, indulged by their father, is violent and dangerous.

Pinky Ford is the felon who gave Kinsey her lock pick tools and taught her to use them. She buys back a ring he pawned, but refuses to hold photos that are wanted by a "bent" cop.

Kinsey's beloved neighbor Henry is out of state caring for his sister. Henry's brother William remains in town, as usual fussing over his health. Rosie still serves her Hungarian concoctions and bad wine at her cafe, and detailed descriptions of her dishes are provided (ugh).

Kinsey is hounded by newspaper reporter Diana Alvarez throughout the story, but in the end makes use of Diana's tell-all personality to reveal the truth
