Though I took an extended break a bit past the half-way mark, it was amazing to me how easily I slipped back into its world. That said, I'm uncertain how to articulate my overall reaction. The writing weaves a spell of its own, and though the plot itself wasn't what I would call enjoyable, I did like the book. I was uncomfortable with the relentlessly sexual (though not by any means erotic) nature of the story. I've since learned this is common in Murakami, but it did affect my ability to engage. This is a work I may need to wait to more genuinely assess.

audiobook note: Elegantly narrated by Alison Hiroto, Marc Vietor, and Mark Boyett. I wouldn't have said so at the outset, but that's because it took me a bit to acclimate to the near-monosyllabic readings. What I came to realize, however, is that those voices were a conscious choice in conveying the spare, detached nature of the characters. Now I can't imagine experiencing the story any other way.

read December 31-January 28 and June 9-June 17.
