I don't read much modern fantasy, but got enough of a recommendation for this one, from a trusted enough source, that I chanced it. And I'm glad I did - the central character is fascinating, the structure is nicely done (a legendary hero is coaxed into telling a biographer the true story of his early years), and it even has a magic system which sort-of works around the Laws of Conservation. And yet - there's a meandering, slightly circular quality to the plotting which recalls the worst of Harry Potter, and which makes it quite clear why the sequel got such lousy reviews. Unless the third volume gets universal raves, I'll not be persevering.
