** spoiler alert **
Oh my God what a crappy book! The plot was practically non-existant and the story telling was lagging and slow and strangely addled. I had been looking forward to reading this book because of the reference to Jane Austen (I'm a big fan) but I was sorely disappointed, because the Austen angle was pretty much non-existant. I suppose the book itself was meant to mirror the marriage plot in Austen books but I just don't see it!!
The characters were annoying more than anything. Mitchells love for Madeleine seems like an obsession more than anything, Madeleine is just needy and weepy and Leonard is a pompous ass.
The story jumps from one person to the other at strange times and events involving more than one main character is first just mentioned, then many pages later told from the POV from one character and then many, many pages later, when you have pretty much forgotten this incident altogether we get it from the POV of the other character. And the story would often describe completely unneccesary events, e.g. one chapter starts with about 2 pages of Alton's life story when he first came to his latest job and then abruptly changes into Madeleines POV, describing the aftermath of the honeymoon. A honeymoon we don't get the details of until much later in the story. I don't know if all this keeping the details of events secret until later is supposed to build suspense about the story but it is just plain annoying!
