Williams does well in portraying humans, the characters themselves are believeable. The actions taken later on however seemed contradictory to me, such as the gentleman caller's treatment of Laura and the brother's abandonment of his entire family. Its not a very positive book and it certainly didn't have a happy ending, which may explain my dislike to a certain extent.
