Flaubert had an excellent skill at prose. The story itself is somewhat lacking for me. I thought this would be a story that I would enjoy, but it seemed too simplistic in plot. A woman wants more for her life than what was fitting for her time, sex, and social position. I guess what really made me not enjoy this was the character of Emma. She was not very logical nor intelligent enough to be manipulative. Of course! The men that she came in contact with were all able to manipulate her without rising any suspicion in her, with the exception of her husband. It seemed to give me that uncomfortable feeling that genuine people are bound to be screwed if they don't stay vigilant in being paranoid of the motives of others. Overall, not a story I deeply enjoyed but beautifully written.
"Human speech is like a cracked tin kettle on which we hammer out tunes to make the bears dance when we long to move the stars."
