Another FirstReads book. This way right up my alley, history and murder. Based on the true events, this novel follows the life of Sari Arany, a woman who chooses to murder her abusive fiance to protect herself and her unborn child. It seems that everything is finished and that she can continue her life when she is approached by a friend who is similarly beset by marital problems. One thing leads to another and word gets around and Sari quickly becomes the leader of a motley crew of murderous village wives.

The first half of the novel is focused on Sari's youth and her relationship with her fiance, Ferenc and does a nice job of establishing the naive affection they have for one another. Then, as the novel progresses and the war rages on, the chapters and the years fly by faster and faster and the detail of the world gets lost and it becomes more or less a list of the victims and the end of the book comes very abruptly.

A novel of choices: lover or fiance, husband or daughter, murder or sacrifice, them or me? Sari has to make difficult choices in her life and then live with the consequences.
