I really enjoyed the meditative work and honest sharing in Musical Chairs. The reason I didn't give it four stars is just because I didn't really feel anchored in the story thematically until about halfway through. There was a marked shift from a bit of a detached tone (understandably and I imagine purposefully, based on the whirlwind of her life that she was describing) to a more attached and emotionally introspective one. It was great to see the march of miserable experience after miserable experience change course into something healing both for Jen herself and her relationships. A lot of fiction that begins similarly doesn't offer nearly as uplifting of an ending. It can be a relief to see that real life can get better even in pretty dark circumstances. If I could give stars for the way Jen confronted her panic attacks and flight-or-fight impulses and built her life back up, I'd definitely give 5.
