I really liked the story that Small told here, but the reason I can't give it five stars is that I just kind of wanted more. The art is really beautiful and evocative, but sometimes I want more words. I know that in this case, there is a reason why he didn't use a lot of words but even just more story, more of his own reflections on the situations. The parts where he is very young seem to be told from the viewpoint of his young self, not understanding and therefore not making explicit much of the events going on around him. Obviously this is a conscious stylistic decision, but I just wish I knew more about the story.
