Perhaps it was the fact that I had just left my doggies behind for 2 1/2 weeks, or the fact that my husband loves motor sports, but I loved this book, every single word. As a writing coach I am frequently trying to stimulate the imagination of my students, especially when it comes to the medium in which they tell their story; chronological, third person, first person, as a diary, as a series of letters, as a retrospective, as a story they are telling their grandchild in the future, or to their unborn child, or, as in this case, as their pet!

I loved this perspective, perhaps because I love dogs and one of ours, Murphy, is like Enzo, different from other dogs, and almost human. So, for me this book took on the life of Murphy and his perspective. It had me wondering what he does to intersect our problems, I am already fully aware of how he comforts us when we are in need.

Of course I cried buckets while reading this, but I laughed out loud too, and wanted to give Denny, Enzo and Garth a great big hug for this fantastic story.

Am happy to say I have found in Garth Stein a new novelist I love; hurry and write more books!
