Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover is with no doubt his most controversial work hence I really anticipated reading this novel. Before reading I had no great knowledge of the novel, only that it was banned because it had explicit sex scenes too racy for the time. Unfortunately, the novel just did not hit the mark for me. After reading it, I didn't know what Lawrence was trying to do - tell a romantic love story (with a dash of vulgarity) or an examination of relationships or sex itself. Although I could see what was controversial about it with one page having the word c*** 7 times and f*** 4 times but I felt that instead of Lawrence trying to make a point (albeit an eye raising one)I felt that he did it because he was bored and he just could.
Overall, even thought I prefer this novel to Lawrence's Sons and Lovers, Lady Chatterley's Lover was a dud (for something so controversial). I wouldn't recommend it to anyone:
if you want a romantic story - read Pride and Prejudice,
if you want ...more
