From the opening pages of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, you know you're in the hands of an extremely talented writer. Despite having very little interest in the American Military, and even less in NFL football, Fountain had me mesmerized with this biting satire of contemporary America. With deft plotting and memorable characters, I was literally cheering on the 8 surviving members of Bravo Squad as they wind up their Victory Tour, a PR exercise hastily arranged by the Bush Administration to garner support for the war in Iraq.
As a further testament to Fountain's masterly pacing, it wasn't until I turned the last page that I realized the entire story takes place during one Dallas Cowboys football game. Exhilarating reading!
