I love Pynchon and this one has some great Pynchon-esque qualities: quirky characters with whimsical names, a careening plot, great evocation of place (LA in 1969 and 1970), and some clever humor. But the plot winds up being too convoluted and the characters too over-the-top. It could be that this is a send-up of a noire L.A. detective novel. But that still didn't make it for me.
