reread The Thin Man every year or so. Forget the fine but lightweight film series, as a novel The Thin Man is a sardonic view of New York just as the Depression is getting underway. The prose is economical, the narrative mostly Hammett dialogue, witty and incisive. Under the whodunnit is an exploration of who we are to each other (would we all be cannibals if hungry enough?) and the lack of satisfying answers for Life's questions.
