recommended for: mystery and history buffs who aren't squeamish

The best book I've read in a long time. Riveting, suspenseful, gritty and dark. The portrait of life in the Soviet Union during Stalin's rule was horrifying and fascinating. Smith doesn't shy away from depicting violence or human depravity, though, so this is not for the faint of heart.
