I was rather pleasantly surprised. Despite the flat black cover, Crank does have moments of brightness and certainly moments of beauty. I was amazed to find something that went beyond or around or over raw, something that was hard hitting but soft and rather lovely to read. Crnak is not a pleasant story but it isn't bad either- in a way very much like real life, it simply is. I found the choices that Kristina/Bree came to make to be surprisingly easy and logical and that her expressions of feeling honest. Critics might be concerned that this book doesn't shy away from the good parts of drugs or over emphasize the bad parts in a way that would warn teens away from drugs. Instead, I think we have a book here that can talk with teens rather than preach at them and this I find refreshing and intriguing, an invitation to think and feel that the contemporary book should have.
