I've long resisted Neil Gaiman. His writing comes off as snobbish (though admittedly he is a great storyteller) and I was never able to get past chapter one of American Gods.

I'm glad I picked up Stardust (the premise seemed pretty interesting and I realized that I wasn't giving Gaiman a fair chance). The story sucks you in right from the start and flows wonderfully from beginning to end. It reads very much like a fairy tale for grown-ups (one of the jacket reviews describes it as such).

The world of Faerie, where most of the story takes place, is nothing that that we haven't seen before from fantasy stories past but it's still something that I hope Gaiman resurrects in future books.
